Project Background

A breeding research base for breeding pigs at a certain agricultural university focuses on topics such as high-quality sow breeding, piglet nursery care, and environmental control in large-scale pig houses. The continuous fermentation of manure in the breeding pig houses produces two harmful gases in high concentrations: ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂):

Harm from excessive ammonia: It irritates the respiratory tract of breeding pigs, induces conjunctivitis, reduces sow estrus rates, increases the number of stillborn and weak piglets, and also endangers the health of the staff;

Excessive carbon dioxide: It leads to oxygen deficiency in the pig house, resulting in decreased feed intake and weakened immunity in pigs, and interferes with the accuracy of breeding data;

Scientific research challenges: Traditional manual handheld detectors produce fragmented data and cannot record continuously for 24 hours. There is a lack of long-term gas records, making it impossible to support quantitative scientific experiments related to ventilation, deodorization, and manure treatment.

Xi'an Runlai RL-608 Environmental Gas Analysis System Solution

(I) Core Technology and Adaptation Advantages of the Equipment

The RL-608 environmental gas analysis system was specially developed by Xi'an Runlai for the high-corrosion working conditions in livestock breeding. It adopts a dual detection principle to measure ammonia and carbon dioxide: ammonia uses TDLAS tunable semiconductor laser technology, and carbon dioxide uses NDIR non-dispersive infrared detection. Different from traditional electrochemical sensors, it is resistant to dust, ammonia corrosion, and has extremely small zero-point drift, suitable for the harsh long-term operation environment of pig houses.

Core Technology Parameters:

  • Measured Components: NH₃, CO₂; Measurement Range: Ammonia 0.00 - 50 ppm, Carbon Dioxide 0 - 3000 ppm;
  • Measurement Accuracy ≤ ±2% F.S, Repeatability ≤ ±1% FS, Long-term Stability Strong;
  • Response Time T90 ≤ 60 seconds, Quickly Captures Changes in Gas Concentration;
  • Standardized Three-level Precise Sampling Pre-treatment Filtration System, Intercepts Dust and Moisture in Pig Houses, Protects Core Detection Unit, Significantly Reduces Equipment Maintenance Frequency. (xarunlai.c...) ;
  • Equipped with a 3U integrated touch screen, it displays real-time concentration, historical curves, and equipment operation status locally. It supports RS485 communication, 4-20mA analog signals, and relay contact outputs, enabling direct linkage with fans and spray deodorization equipment for automatic start and stop.

(II) On-site Complete Deployment Plan

Scientific Positioning of Points

Based on the spatial structure of the breeding pens, the location of the manure channels, and the air circulation pattern, 3 sets of gas sampling probes are set up for each breeding and rearing pen, evenly distributed at a height of 1.5 meters (the breathing layer of the breeding pigs), and the sampling pipelines use corrosion-resistant stainless steel Φ6 pipes, which are uniformly collected to the outside analysis cabinet to avoid direct exposure of the equipment to the highly corrosive environment inside the pens.

System Complete Configuration

Each pen is equipped with 1 RL-608 main unit, a three-level filtration pre-treatment unit, a multi-channel sampling switching valve, and a 220V stable power supply module; a unified data transmission network is set up for the entire site, and the equipment uploads real-time gas data via the RS485 bus to the base central control room management platform to achieve centralized monitoring of gas data for 32 pens.

Intelligent linkage control logic

Managers can customize thresholds in the system: ammonia warning threshold of 8 ppm, high-risk threshold of 10 ppm; carbon dioxide warning threshold of 1500 ppm, high-risk threshold of 2000 ppm.

When the gas concentration reaches the warning value: the system gives local sound and light alarms, and simultaneously sends alarm information to the managers' mobile phones;

When the concentration exceeds the high-risk threshold: the relay of the equipment automatically outputs a signal, synchronously activating the negative pressure fan and deodorization spray system, automatically increasing the ventilation volume, until the gas concentration drops back to the range before the equipment automatically reduces the frequency to achieve fully automatic closed-loop regulation of the environmental control system.

The technical director of the pig breeding base, who summarized and evaluated the customer project, said: "Before introducing Xi'an Runlai RL-608 gas analysis system, managing the air quality in the pens had always been a core challenge for breeding high-quality pigs. Manual monitoring not only required a lot of manpower but also lacked any standardization for regulation. Runlai's equipment is designed to handle the harsh conditions of high dust and corrosion in pig farms. The laser detection technology is far more stable than the ordinary sensing devices we tried before. With its 24/7 monitoring and automatic ventilation and deodorization when levels exceed standards, it truly achieves fully automated closed-loop control of the pen environment. Thanks to the comprehensive gas data records provided by the system, our breeding research work now has solid data support. Both the health level of breeding pigs and the mating efficiency have improved significantly. At the same time, labor costs, energy consumption, and equipment maintenance costs have all decreased. This is a highly cost-effective professional environmental monitoring system that's perfect for large-scale pig breeding bases. For future expansions and new pens, we will continue to choose Xi'an Runlai's gas analysis equipment exclusively."
