The working principle of the zirconia sensor is based on a stable electrochemical process. At its core is a zirconia electrolyte that operates at high temperatures and can conduct oxygen ions. During operation, the sensor actively pumps oxygen ions from the reference side (air) to the measurement side (gas to be measured) by applying a controlled reverse voltage. This pumping current is used to balance the natural diffusion ion flow caused by the difference in oxygen concentration between the two sides. When the system reaches dynamic equilibrium, the value of this pumping voltage corresponds to the oxygen concentration in the sample gas, thus enabling accurate measurement of oxygen content.
